Pro Audio Equipment Reviews

There was a time when, recording equipment was very expensive. It was so expensive that it left out the little guys compeletly. So they would have to pay the big studio owners every time they wanted to record. And that was extremely expensive. In the last part of the 70's, they came out with smaller tape decks. The  first ones were reel to reel, and later four track cassette machines.

That made it easier for the home recording enthusiasts to record at home. Then dat machines came along and for the first time they could have real studio quality.

Now, more than a decade later, we have access to unlimited tracks with even better sound  quality than the Adats, which was only 16 bit. We can do much more than we used to, even with standard recording software we can get for free online.

Obviously the more money you have on hand now, the better. But you shouldn't let that stop you if you don't have much money to start. There are only two things that are important enought that you need right now. And one of those you can find free online!

1. A software recording and editing package

2. An interface so you can record vocals, guitar, drums, bass, etc.

Home Recording Studio Setup

The software is for recording and editing your recorded tracks. And the audio interface is for  getting your audio into your computer so your software can record it.
If you only want to record yourself, you'll only need 1 to 2 inputs, making the interface less expensive for you.

If you're in a band though and want to record as a band, you're going to be needing a lot more inputs, making it more complicated and expensive. If you have four people in your band, you're going to need at least 8 tracks recording at the same time. You'll usually  want a mic on the snare, one on the bass, and two overheads to pick up everything else.

You will need another free track for the bass guitar player because he'll probably want to record direct to the interface.

Depending on the guitar player, he might want to use a plugin to simulate an amp, if he does,  he'll go directly into the interface as well.

The singer will always use a microphone, no other way around it. Usually it's best to record the singer with a large diaphragm condincer microphone, because it's usually better to record vocals with one.

So if you want to record a band, you need a computer, hopefully you already have one of those, some software for recording/editing your recordings - if you need to, you  can find the software free online. You're also going to need an audio interface so you'll be able to record guitars, drums, bass guitar, and vocals. You'll be able to find reasonable prices for audio interfaces at amazon.com, as well as musicians friend website, or the zzounds website. Currently, I can't recommend ebay.com

Now if you're going to record a band, your biggest issue is the drums for now. You need at least four microphones for drums. If you have a bunch of old mics laying around, you can use those for now.

After some time, and some money saved up, you'll need to get a pair of small diaphragm condensors.
The important thing is you don't have to get all this stuff at one time. You'll start to  understand two years down the road and look at all the equipment you'll have then. Because  you've saved up money, and just like any tool, you get them when you need them. This will help  you with your home studio recording setup.
